The Mexican-American Coalition (MXAC) was constituted by a group of Mexican and Mexican-American leaders including Advisors and Ex-Advisors of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, non-profit advocates and community activist, representing different groups and organizations from all across the nation. MXACIR includes some of the most influential Mexican and Mexican-American Leaders in the US, individuals deeply involved in advocacy for the Mexican community and with several years of combined experience fighting for social justice united with the objective of achieving a Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
The primary goals for the coalition include three main components:
- First, to assure that the voice of the Mexican-American Immigrant community is represented in the CIR decision-making process by members of this community;
- Second, to assure that the Mexican-American Immigrant voice serves as a legit conduit in helping to solve the immigration problems in our country in a humane and comprehensive way;
- And third, to guarantee the empowerment of Mexican-American Immigrants across the U.S., reflecting the great diversity of our nation.
MXAC has been growing steadily during 2009 and has widened its membership to unify and represent the Mexican-American voice. The Mexican community represents about 65% of the Hispanic/Latino community in the US, hence the importance for this community to have a voice and representation in the field of comprehensive immigration reform. MXAC includes individuals from local and national Hispanic/Latino organizations, hometown clubs and federations, labor unions, Spanish-based media, Mexican business owners, community leaders, organizations, businesses and members of the community at large.
From 2009 to 2010, MXAC was a vital part of a coordinated campaign called Reform Immigration for America which goal was to pass federal legislation that would create workable solutions for our broken immigration system that upholds our nation’s values and moves our entire country forward. To support such campaign, MXAC developed several initiatives and took action in different sub-campaigns including:
- Campaign to Stop Proposition 287-G
- Disagreement of undocumented exclusion on the Health care debate
- Support to principles of Rep. Gutierrez in new CIR
- Develop local and regional actions to echo a nationwide mobilization to Washington DC to promote CIR on October 13th
- Campaign to promote “No” against Vitter’s amendment 2644
- Anniversary of elections: November 3rd 2009.
President Obama committed to submit legislation regarding immigration reform during his first year of presidency. However, we have seen a very hostile environment against undocumented individuals in recent discussions regarding health care and US Census. Immigration reform is a subject that affects all the members of our community and therefore we need to respond quickly to increase support for a workable immigration reform and insist on the respect for the human rights of all immigrants regardless of their immigration status. MXAC believes the economic, cultural and social contributions of immigrants in the US are integral parts of what makes us as a nation. We are not only a nation of immigrants but also a nation that prides itself on the belief that all men are created equal.
